How do I find a great Business Coach?
- Make sure you are ready. Must be ready to take on board areas that might challenge you. Must be ready to work hard in and out of your coaching sessions
- Use your network. Think of those you trust and ask them directly if they’ve used a coach. Make sure you ask what they liked what the benefit to them of hiring the coach was
- Don’t (necessarily) look for an expert from your field. Check out the coach the usual way, - bio/resume/google to gain a sense of who they are. You are not engaging them for their resume or credentials, you are engaging them for their ability to help you achieve what you really want and to challenge the status quo. It may help to have someone coach you who understands your industry, but it is not essential. It may seem counterintuitive but a coach’s role is the person in front of them. If you still feel you need a SME, you may be seeking is a coach/consultant hybrid. For e.g., Working on strategies. Make it clear from the outset what you are expecting. If you do want someone to teach you something or to do something for you — you are seeking something in addition to just coaching. This can be a great option too, just ensure you are clear with your coach on what you really want and need and what you expect of them
- Speak to your coach. Before making any commitments, speak to prospective coaches. Make note on how different coaches approach your first conversation and whether that feels right to you. A great coach won’t take every client, and they will be very keen themselves to figure out if they are the right person to support you. Some coaches do prefer to coach in a specific field, or they have a special area of focus.
